A 19-year-old Georgia man faces felony charges after police say he tried to strangle his mother in a parked car, fled in her vehicle and later led officers on a pursuit reaching nearly 100 mph.

FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Elijah Parker was in custody in its Oct. 30 report. Cartersville Police Capt. Greg Sparacio said Parker told investigators he had intended to kill his mother, but she escaped.

The alleged attack took place outside a Cartersville grocery store. According to police, Parker's mother broke free and sought help inside a nearby business. Parker then drove away in her car, and officers circulated a lookout for it.

Officers in Adairsville spotted the vehicle a couple of hours later and tried to stop it, police said. Parker allegedly refused to stop and accelerated, beginning a chase that crossed from Bartow County into Gordon County. Police said he struck another vehicle and a stop sign before being taken into custody.

The charges include aggravated assault, false imprisonment and theft by taking, along with more than 10 traffic violations and driving without a valid license, according to the report.

At the time of the report, authorities had not identified Parker's mother or said whether she needed additional medical care. They also had not disclosed the extent of any injuries to the person in the vehicle struck during the chase.
