One person was killed and eight others were wounded Saturday in a shooting near Birmingham’s Legion Field after the Magic City Classic football game, FOX5 Atlanta reported, citing police.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire found nine people with gunshot wounds on a nearby street where vendors had set up. One victim died at the scene. Police described one of the survivors as being in critical condition and the remaining seven as stable.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had already departed the stadium. Alabama A&M had defeated Alabama State 17–13 before the shooting nearby.

Investigators recovered multiple weapons at the scene, according to the report. A police spokesperson said one person had been detained for questioning. The circumstances leading to the gunfire had not been released as of FOX5 Atlanta’s Nov. 1 report.

The Magic City Classic is an annual matchup between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, the state’s two largest historically Black universities. The event brings fans to Birmingham for football, a parade and tailgating.
